6th to 13th September

Reveling aside, in addition to the usual suspects, this season welcomes a host of up-and-coming designers. Korean designer and former head of women’s wear at J. Crew, Marissa Webb debuts her eponymous label on September 7. Other newcomers to watch on the spring runways are emerging designers Todd Snyder (men’s wear), Monika Chiang, Angel Sanchez — whose devotees include Gisele Bundchen, Beyoncé, Eva Longoria and Elizabeth Hurley. The former director of Ports International, Tia Cibani, is tipped to stage one of New York’s must-see shows. Her debut collection melds boyishness and exoticism in an ode to Marguerite Duras novel The Lover, a romantic tale of 1920s Indochina.

Brazilian fashion brand Osklen will showcase the collection it presented in São Paulo in June at the Lincoln Center. Yohji Yamamoto’s Y-3 label which celebrated the 10th anniversary of its collaboration with Adidas in Paris in January is organizing a milestone show in Manhattan on September 9.

As one door closes, another one opens… Sofia Kokosalaki will present her last women’s collection for premium brand Diesel Black Gold on September 11 while avant-garde fashion house Maison Martin Margiela prepares to première its second line “MM6” on the NYFW runway on Day 3. The brand gave shoppers a head’s up last month as it unveiled its first-ever women’s wear boutique in Manhattan. Meanwhile, Proenza Schouler and British luxury brand (and NYFW newcomer) Belstaff are both set to open flagship stores on New York’s deluxe retail strip, Madison Avenue.

Day 4 (Sunday, September 9) is shaping up to be a big one with shows by DKNY, Diane Von Furstenberg, Zac Posen and Custo Barcelona topping the bill.

Project Runway jury member and designer to the stars Michael Kors will present his latest take on jetset chic on September 12.

A trio of affordable luxury brands officially go digital this season: See by Chloé,Pierre Balmain and ICB by Prabal Gurung have set dates for their online shows: September 7, 10 and 11 respectively. Public relations firm KCD started the trend by convincing its clients to opt for online-only shows with a view to decongesting NY’s Fashion Week jam-packed calendar. In February, Prabal Gurung invited web users to a six-minute digital screening of his Autumn/Winter 2012 collection. How does it works The clothes are filmed and the designers are interviewed, both in advancen and pieces from the collection can be ordered online via separate windows as the video rolls.
