Far from the Madding Crowd (1967)
Set in Victorian England, this film was not typical of the 1960s style. Alan Barrett was nominated for a BAFTA for best costume design as he encapsulated life in rural English countryside.
Tweed jackets with tails and wellies, flat caps and trench coats were the order for the men and the women wore high collared dresses with embroidery embellishments. The Victorian era has long been inspiration for fashion designers but most recently Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueens’ Autumn/Winter 2012 collection saw styles lifted directly from the aesthetics of this film.
