The risky subject matter ensured this film would be an arty success, but out of it came a marriage made in fashion. Yves Saint Laurent started his career designing costumes for film and found his muse while designing the wardrobe for Catherine Deneuve on the set of Belle de Jour.

The 1960s shift dresses, fitted trench coats and glamorous evening dresses ensured a roaring success and Catherine and Yves continued to work together on many more movies. He even used her as a model for his couture collections.
