The Stepford Wives (1975)
This film coined a term in fashion that we still use today. It represents the New England country chic made popular by immaculate housewives in rural USA. Think Laura Ashley style frills and florals and not a hair out of place. This satirical thriller features robots designed by men to create the perfect wife, one that has no interests, desires or thoughts of her own, she just emulates what her husband wants. Joanna and Bobbie are the two ‘real’ wives that move to the area and they are represented as such by dressing in shabbier clothing, more masculine and shapeless. The Stepford Wives style is becoming more popular in vintage circles as trends in bakery and sewing are growing. It has become quite tongue in cheek to admit affiliation with a Stepford wife, but the modern version can have it all.
