Spring Summer 13 does not disappoint when it comes to the dapper man. The catwalks were rife with new trends to take you into the coming season.  Here, we identify the main trends for a wardrobe makeover that will turn heads.

MAIN LOOKS: DANDY

With more and more men taking a deeper interest in their appearance, there is no surprise that the Dandy was present on many catwalks this season, but this time with a little hipster mixed in.

Alexander McQueen

Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen showed an elegant man with double breasted jackets and pocket squares, but by opening the shirt and teaming a suit with a wide rimmed fedora, the man we saw became more casual and stylish.

Dries Van Noten

Suits were looser like we saw at Dries Van Noten, and what says confidence in style more than donning a pair of sandals with your office attire? Sunglasses topped it off to bring us straight into summer.

We saw them in more casual fabrics at John Varvatos, such as thick jersey, giving a nod to the tracksuit in a dignified way and at Vuitton they were teamed with contrasting shoes that look like sneakers. Sportswear will always be a staple for spring summer but put it together, as you see, with dandy silhouettes and you’ll be the most stylish man on the field.

Vivienne Westwood

Westwood’s signature print never goes out of style and takes us back to the sixties, where characters like the talented Mr. Ripley are still influencing our wardrobes.

MAIN LOOKS: METALLIC

If you want to make more of an impact with fashion you could follow the metallic trend that dominated the catwalks at Burberry. They moved out of their comfort zone of muted sophisticated colours with coats that were reminiscent of a foil blanket and in electric colours that are sure to brighten up your attire.

Despite the futuristic connotations of this, the clothes stayed relevant. Jeans and t-shirts were glammed up, as well as double breasted suits and trench coats.

We saw the return of the bomber jacket made metallic at Lanvin and Frankie Morello, making us think we were sitting in the audience of a boxing match.

Forget leather this season, it’s all about the metals.

MAIN LOOKS: NAUTICAL

It’s the start of spring summer and with it comes the idea of boats. Whether it be racing rowing boats, relaxing on the deck of a speedboat or sailing from island to island, we love to think of ourselves as sailors. Inspiration for the nautical whimsy came in tenfold from our favorites.

Jean Paul Gaultier showed us his signature stripes and we saw lightweight linen perfect for the beaches of St. Tropez at Corneliani and Giorgio Armani.

The Dandy was still present here however, as we saw sharp shorts teamed with double breasted jackets, reiterating the importance of putting an elegant spin on your style this season.

MAIN LOOKS: PASTEL

Boyish good looks are never far from the catwalks but we saw it enhanced with a playful use of pastels this season. Today’s man is metrosexual and Givenchy showed us just how much with pastel pink in sleeveless jackets and skirt-like tunics.

The innocence of these colours ensures a boyish charm and gave us a definite Mediterranean summer feel, and the posh preppy boy look felt like it was being sharpened to seem more sophisticated and worldly.

Junia Watanabe

Just make sure you wear it with attitude like we saw on the catwalks of Junya Watanabe. This season’s boy is playful, but not one to be messed with.

COLOURS: NAVY & BLUE

Midnight blue and Navy are – for me – the colours of autumn winter, but designers showed us that for spring summer we mustn’t ignore these tones, just wear them in a different way. Lightweight fabrics are the key, in linen and thin suede.

Ermenegildo Zegna

Roberto Cavalli used them in elegance, the midnight man in midnight blue, where Ermenegildo Zegna catered for a man in a colder clime. Summer knits and the focus on fabrics were brought alive by these colours, perhaps showing us a more appropriate tone for an overcast day.

Giorgio Armani

Giorgio didn’t step away from his suited and booted man, but did it in lightweight denim and linen for a more elegant take on the colours.

COLOURS: BRIGHT

As we have seen from the metallic trend, bold and bright looks are key this summer. Take the safe option and throw on a bright t-shirt with your outfit (though preferably with print trousers as seen at Jean Paul Gaultier).

The more daring the better though – match your hat, shoes and trench with the exact same bright tones or clash colours in the same garment. Wear it head to toe like the florescent suits we saw at Gucci, or make a statement with a brightly coloured coat.

Whatever you do though, don’t leave brights out of your wardrobe this season, it is a must for summer.

COLOURS: WHITE

Traditionally white is one that will get lost in the background, the start of something complimented by a more eye-catching colour, but this season our attention was caught by the colour white alone.

Most designers achieved this by doing white head to toe – suit jackets, shirts, trousers and shoes all in the same tone with tiny pops like yellow collars at Salvatorre Feregamo or tunic trousers at Givency.

White became the focal point, so keep it bold and make the canvas stand out alone.

MUST HAVE ITEMS: BOMBER

Much like in the 1980s the Bomber Jacket is a must have this season, and not much has changed. It still has rounded shoulders, is cinched in at the waist and it still looks good with every outfit.

Burberry showed us you can wear it with a suit and tie for a more stylish office to bar look, or wear it in monochrome like they did at Bottega Venetta.

The best thing about the Bomber Jacket is that it can be used to portray every trend. Get one in bright or metallic, Midnight blue or Navy, team it up with the same colour head to toe or wear it with the sleeves rolled up for casual stylish look. If you only buy one item this season, make it a statement Bomber Jacket.

ACCESSORIES: BAGS

Man’s bags have come a long way in the last few years. We rarely see collections without them – convenience is giving way to style and we are seeing it become more of an accessory than a necessity.  There is no shame in carrying a handbag.

Emporio Armani made a clutch bag more manly with a big strap and brief folder-like zip and we saw the large floppy tote that has become so popular in womenswear at Bottega Venetta And Giorgio Armani.

For a more structured tote look to Dior Homme, and Lanvin championed the rucksack in this seasons metallic trend as well as leather and linen.

There seems to be no rules when it comes to man bags this season, wear the straps long or short, wear them across the body or carry them in your hand, wear them structured or floppy. Just wear them.
