Valentino Women Spring Summer 2016 –

Maria Grazia Chuiri and Pierpaolo Piccioli opened their SS16 show for Valentino with a journey to Africa.  Ceramic necklaces were made to resemble bones, while tribal patterns were fashioned into sophisticated dresses.  The aim was, as the creative directors put it, to fuse together the old and new: to look to the tribal and spiritual, unite it with the modern day woman and sophistication, placing importance on how the old affects the new, and merging nature with human artistry.  Leather was laser cut into patterns, while micro studs adorned the pieces.  Micro beading was also used for embellishment.

The finale of the show was a journey to the beginning of time and the essential of primitive nature, as seen with the micro hand beading on tulle, which depicted tiny similitudes of the beginning of life.  Hand crafted feather and ceramic necklaces made the models look as though they were semblances of fossils of delicate, pre-historic birds.  The handbags were hand painted, and the models’ hair was braided into tight corn rows.  The collection was breath-taking; it was perhaps one of the most unique of fashion week, and one of intricate detailing that spoke of hours of craftsmanship.
