Spring-Summer 2013 – Illustrating that most women are ‘worker bees’ Sarah Burton took inspiration from both bees and the female form; ingenious! First up, a fashionable take on a beekeepers hat, the mesh being black, wide and covering the face. To go with this, a sharp jacket in black and gold honeycomb print, a waist belt and cropped mesh trousers. Structuring was a strong look, giving a stiff shape to tiered bodices, hems, jackets and waistcoats, all with a voluminous tulip hem placing emphasis on the waist. Caged tops and thick golden belts were a true show of the craftsmanship so synonymous with the McQueen brand. Ball gowns were extravagant in cerise and soft honey tones, their structured pleated skirts also pertained to the translucent trend. Later, there were draped chiffon with dramatic voluminous skirts and off the shoulder sleeves, the skirts grew in shape or cascaded to the floor creating a finale of spellbinding gowns; it was a true masterclass.
