Spring-Summer 2013 – Paul Smith had the consumer at the forefront of his mind when creating such a functional, and as the man himself explained, ‘easy to wear’ collection. Smith, acknowledging that fashion is not recession proof, went out his way to combat this with a self proclaimed ‘optimistic’ and as such, punchy show. Separates were fundamental to his recession combating plan allowing any given shirt, skirt or trouser to be bought in conjunction with an existing wardrobe. Playing with volume consisted of parachute-like dresses in block colours in square or stripe print; billowy slit skirts; wide legged trousers, and sea-island cotton blouses and V-neck tops. Though much of the famous tailoring was missing, the cotton-lace blouse worn with slick black tailored shorts created the perfect summer workwear outfit. In all, the simple proportions like the trouser-shirt combo were sellable, slick and smart.
