Balenciaga

Spring-Summer 2011 – Nicolas Ghesquiere reinvented couture techniques for a futuristic vision.  The models bore slicked-back hair in quiffs or ponytails which captured a tomboy look. This was strengthened by the opening pieces: deconstructed appliqué body panels.  Both this, and the jerry-rigged prints, created a post-modern ideal. Lopsided trims on the lace and patch-worked fabric seemed to have been pieced together with an off-centered leather belt. This was in accordance with Ghesquiere’s idea of refraction and reflection which he has clearly played around with. Although seen in antiquity, blossoms (a predominant feature throughout SS11) brought a touch of class which comes with Balenciaga. These were pieced together with contrasting hem-line blouses. The show closed with futuristic dresses. Geo-metric designs pieced fabrics together in a less than ordinary composition, embodied in white and navy slashed shift dresses.
