Maison Martin Margiela

Autumn-Winter 2013/14 – ‘Expect the unexpected’ should be the mantra for Margiela whether it be Ready-to-Wear or Haute Couture. It was a modern take on Couture and offered something more unique. The use of denim was an extreme move on from the ball gowns and chiffon that are the premise for most Couture weeks.  Margiela focused on a rather Artianal collection, focusing on the reconstruction and deconstruction of vintage items. Embellished masks covered the models faces in that shocking Margiela’s way. There was a pertinent use of rubber throughout, creating long swing coats, coating trousers and making latex knee-high boots. This epitomised the eccentricity of the show. All the while, the floral trend has been a highlight from Couture week. Margiela floral embroidery both covered the models faces and chest, along with big blooms dominating the hem of swing coats. Luxe satin gowns verged on the side of beauty, yet were never too dressy when worn with the platform knee-high boots. It was typically Margiela, but in an untypical Couture way.
