Chanel Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2016 – The exaggerated sleeves on the jackets of the skirt suits that opened this show set a precedent for silhouettes that was maintained throughout. Pale tweeds marked the entrance, another theme that played throughout; pale greys, fawns, and off-white variations were sporadically interrupted by the appearance of deep navy or black pieces, and the two rainbow, watercolor print dresses at the middle.

Shape and length brought to mind the 1920’s, with straight, mid-calf length skirts, dropped waists and layers skirts. Floral details, from silk flowers to embroidery brought texture and playfulness to many looks, seen in a trim across the bodice or comprising a voluminous bolero. Blouses and dresses with billowing sleeves echoed the drama of the broad-sleeved jackets. A beaded-satin jumpsuit worn under a sparkling sheer cape emits an air of elegance and romance.

Sequence, scaling, beadwork and fringe are among the intricate details abounding in this collection. A notable accessory was the appearance of small pouches, double-wrapped at the waist on a simple belt, about the size of a smartphone. One cannot help but bring to mind the fanny-pack, and wonder if this is perhaps an evolution on this idea. Platform heels were the staple shoe, featuring dramatically shaped cork soles and toe caps.
