Calvin Klein Collection

Calvin Klein Collection Woman Autumn-Winter 2017-18 – This show marks the hotly anticipated debut of Raf Simons as Calvin Klein’s Chief Creative Officer, and after already creating ripple through his politically charged, ‘white bandana’ invitations, which invites guests and supporters to be united under this troubled political climate, the show is surely not one to be missed.

Simons’ was sure to utilise Calvin Klein’s All-American routes with the AW17 collection. Think denim, western style tailoring and accessories, American flag printed garments and country style, traditional florals.

The co-ed nature of the show meant many of the clothing styles were androgynous, with low slung fitted trousers and tucked-in structured shirts, some outfits even mirrored in her and hers styles, although the gendered differences were very subtle. Contrasting pockets were a common theme throughout, enforcing the western style of many of the pieces. Many looks were finished with boxy, oversized yet well-tailored pea coats, shearling style aviator jackets or leather jackets, adding a masculine edge to the female models dressed in floral dresses and skirts.

Aside from the use of head to toe denim and block colours, Simon’s frequently used transparent plastic and sheer flesh toned material, for both men and women. Again, enforcing the lack of distinction between the gender of the clothing, but introducing an interesting kind of sex appeal.

All in all Simon’s debut for Calvin Klein saw an almost satirical take on all American style, and exhibiting an endless list of themes and trends. The abundance of denim and cowboy shirts and boots contrasted against the modern, futuristic use of transparent PVC garments and traditional dresses and tailoring.
