Altuzarra Woman Autumn-Winter 2017-18 – Altuzarra is known for ‘embodying the quintessential modern woman,’ and this collection combined elements of the past with the practicality of the modern.

Altuzarra hinted on Instagram that the paintings of Flemish artist ‘Bernhard Strigel,’ ‘Portrait of a Woman,’ were one of the major influences amongst other 16th century work. His work displayed ‘elaborate costume, with its imported fabrics and embroideries and ostentatious jewellery, places her among the elite echelons of society.’ It is clear from the collection that the decadence of the rich and their art of this era has been reflected in the designs. Perhaps a journey back through European history, to escape the reality of today.
 
The use of heavy, luxurious fabrics such as velvet and fur trims, pearls and of course the Tudor neckline, appear to be emulations of the fashion trends within the paintings. The overtly traditional was mixed with the modern, with winter floral dresses and wool sweaters with bell sleeves bringing an everyday feel back to the collection, compared to some of the more elaborate pieces.
 
The devil was in the details, with variations of elaborate fastenings on many pieces such as oversized ribbon bows, chains, pearl buttons and baroque style embroidery. The inclusion of corset designs on the front of fitted coats gave a contemporary twist to one of the oldest fashion trends in history, now the woman has control of her own corset.
