Every Day’s a Holiday (1937)

With the gowns in this film designed by Elsa Schiaparelli, Coco Chanel’s rival, this film was bound to be full of glamour and extravagance.

The designer of couture and surreal hats who once said “The film fashions of today are your fashions of tomorrow” did not disappoint in this film ensuring she provided a strong basis for fashion inspiration with her designs for fur stoles, large feathered hats and revealing lace dresses. She created a perfect relationship between class and sexiness and Mae West carried them off flawlessly, with her golden age of Hollywood looks and unwaivering confidence.  The mannequin she used to design the costume, based on Mae West’s measurements, was also the inspiration for the perfume bottle for Schiaparelli’s fragrance ‘Shocking!’
