Valenciennes Lace
Valenciennes Lace is a type of bobbin lace. It is fine and durable. It is an intricate handmade lace and is characterised by having floral patterns on a mesh background. Valenciennes Lace is so called as it is named after the city of Valenciennes in Northern France where the lace was first made, during the 18th Century. Originally it was made using a linen thread on bobbins and wrapped around pins in the background fabric to make the patterns. However, more commonly nowadays it is made on a machine from cotton thread since the 1830’s.This lace, like many others is used for trimmings, cuffs, collars, lingerie and shawls.
