Toile

Toile fabric is the generic term given to any fabric used for the purpose of making a toile. A toile is a trial garment, made during the initial design stages so that the pattern can be addressed and adjusted if necessary. The fabrics mainly used for this purpose are calico, muslin or a similar, inexpensive fabric. ‘Toile’ can also be used in reference to any lightweight, sheer fabric which is usually made from linen or cotton. The term ‘Toile’ is French and literally means ‘Cloth’. It is usually un-dyed and has no special finishes, this makes it cheaper.
