Sailcloth

Sailcloth fabric is very similar to canvas and can be woven in a plain weave, basket weave or a rib weave. Like Canvas, it is available in various weights depending on the end use requirements. Sailcloth is generally constructed using fibres such as cotton, linen, jute and viscose or blends of these. The term ‘Sailcloth’ comes from the fact that heavier weights of this fabric have been used for centuries to make sails on boats. This fabric has only more recently been used in garments, since the late 19^th Century, but it is only the lighter weights that are suitable for this purpose.
