Romal
Romal fabric is a plain woven Indian fabric. It is usually made from silk and is used for dresses and handkerchiefs. It is used so frequently in handkerchief manufacture that the term ‘Romal’ is often applied to a checked cotton or silk kerchief used as a scarf in India as a headdress by men. The word ‘Romal’ is Hindu and this fabric is sometimes referred to as ‘Rumal.’ Romal fabric is often embroidered to make elaborate headscarves, usually with floral or figurative motifs and was often used to cover gifts and offerings. Romal fabric was traditionally exchanged between the bride and grooms families at weddings.
