Melton

Melton fabric is a thick, dense fabric. It has a slight nap and was traditionally made from wool. It can also be made from cotton or synthetic fibres. Melton fabric was very popular in hunting clothing since around 1820. It is hard-wearing and this quality has made it a popular choice for coats, jackets and uniforms. This fabric was named after the town of Melton Mowbray in Central England, where it was once manufactured in large quantities. Melton fabric is tightly woven, and is finished with a smooth face to conceal the weave. It is also sometimes heavily felted for this reason.
