Matelassè

Matelasse fabric is a woven fabric. It is characterised by having a blistered surface. This is created by the back and front of the fabric shrinking at different rates during finishing. Originally, Matelasse fabric was made from silk or wool, but now it can be made from cotton, viscose, synthetic fibres or other blends. This fabric is mainly used for dresses, suits and trimmings. Matelasse fabric is a heavy, thick textile which appears to be padded but is actually not. It is woven on a jacquard loom. The term ‘Matelasse’ is French and means ‘Quilted.’ It is also used extensively in interiors for things such as cushion covers.
