Loden

Loden fabric is a heavy, water resistant fabric. It has been used in outerwear since the 16^th Century. It was used mainly for coats, hats and jackets. The fabric is napped and is woven using the oily wool of the Tyrolean mountain sheep, usually blended with other fibres nowadays including Mohair and Alpaca. Loden fabric is generally dyed a dark green-grey, a colour that is now often termed ‘Loden Green.’ The origins of the word Loden could either be from the German word ‘Loda,’ meaning ‘Haircloth,’ or it could be from the Austrian village of Loderers, where the fabric originates from.
