Burano Lace

Burano Lace is lace which is made on the island of Burano, in the Venetian Lagoon. Burano Lace can be differentiated from Alencon Lace by looking at the mesh work behind the lace. Burano lace is worked much more tightly and the mesh has a square appearance. It was first made in the 16^th Century and introduced trading to Cyprus, the manufacture declined in around the 18^th Century until a lace school was opened. It was made entirely by hand using needles. Nowadays however few people produce lace in the traditional way as it is time consuming and therefore expensive.
