Reflecting on Sandro Botticelli’s colour palette the baroque trend that has swept the catwalk resembles the richness of the Roman Catholic Church as religious art (like fashion itself) was designed to move, amaze and please.

Similar to the interior of Basilica di Santa Maria and other luxurious Marian monuments the garments were draped in jewels and embellishments. Yet whether bedazzled by colour or jewels, prints or stitched lace the reoccurring theme of playing with texture, remained.

Another reflection of the Roman influence predominately the architectural symmetry was the obvious yet sometimes subtly symmetrical design throughout.

Ranging from demure socialite to ‘Braveheart’ heathen with slashes of fur and leather designers embrace the wild and wonderful. McQueen harnesses animalistic tendencies with feline markings or ruffles that emanate feathers of something grand and mischievous like a Raven.

Chalayan and Ellie Saab tame the trend with a more luxurious look. Saab with jewelled hues, rich fur and equally as slick tailoring.

TOTAL LOOK: WRAP UP

Keeping the cold winters in mind, designers have made their collection more accommodating for the bitter-weather months that lye a head.

  

Acne Studios

Some designers have taken the theme literally, Acne created structure with stiff fabrics that wrap across the torso, softly contorting the body yet certainly catching your eye.

  

Burberry Prorsum

Others are more subtle but equally dynamic with their draping. With so much fabric, an cinched in waist brings femininity back to this sophisticated, urban look: take note from Burberry Prorsum and Ann Demeulemeester.

Calf length, just above the ankle seems to be the Autumn/Winter coat this season.

Details can range from, buttons positioned in a military style lining the coat in an asymmetrical form or big, fur buckled belts from Céline.

Exhibiting cascading cashmere blankets or silk scarves in bold Aztec and floral prints is Burberry Prorsum: a house that emanates earthy hues, camomile, cyan and salmon pinks to warm the winter palettes.

MUST HAVE ITEM: LONG FLUID DRESS

Fluidity and movement adorns the catwalk this season.

  

Elie Saab

Elie Saab not only addresses inspiration from liquids but also from opulent, full-bodied wine tones to rich red-cherry colours. Classic silhouettes are renovated with cascading tones of colour illuminating the effortless motion throughout the dress.

  

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs’s sci-fi, sport dresses bring a relaxed and comfortable feel. He trends thigh-high splits with matching leggings or trousers keeping the collection’s causal cool as well as a practicality.

  

Valentino

Valentino on the other hand, finesses a fine line between nudity and demure dresses. The garments are exquisitely crafted to capture movement, art and femininity. Embellished birds dance, whilst forest flowers climb across the attire whilst opulent sheer gold fabric reflects the Victorian silhouette. The earthy tones through the collection also subsume this.

 

MUST HAVE ITEM: BLAZER

Shape up and be sharp because power-dressing blazers are back.

Swerving clear of the 80’s padded shoulders this trends reignites sex appeal, whether you take a more modest, feminine approach with Emporio Armani or exuberate strength through Christian Dior with low neck, tailored jackets and pencil cut trousers: all in deep jewel palettes.

Winter pastels vary from frosty greys, ice blues and bubblegum pinks.

Chanel mixes in metallics to give a futuristic vibe whilst Marc Jacobs contemplates form and texture creating almost aquatic-like dresses: devising a print that mirrors the motion of ripples in water.

This idea is evident in his staging also with the catwalk lit with indulgent green and blues against the walls that resemble sunset colours that are trickled with cloud shape shadows (from actually cloud props hanging above the audience). The music prompts tension as a metaphor for the surge of a storm.

Chloé on the other hand, showcases feminine tones with soft nudes and purples whilst Hermes tailors minimalistic; hem-less cuts in equally simplistic colouring.

COLOURS: A POP OF ORANGE

Last year it was pink, now orange redefines the foundation of an outfit as the new autumnal colour.

Designers deluge their collections in coral, tangerine, persimmon and neon orange. This trend is not just for garments but also for all walks of accessories including belts, chokers and handbags.

Be bold in this gallant colour (as it suits all skin types) with large geometric or dainty prints or perhaps try sophisticating the fun colour by baring only a hint of it. However, don’t forget to play around with texture through silks and wools then if your feeling extra exuberant go for a full on orange fur coat like Balmain has showcased.

PRINT: FLORAL

A period that’s inspiration has reoccurred throughout this season is the Victorian era.

  

Valentino

Valentino was inspired by Victorian blooms for his floral designs whereas Thakon sported loud motifs of pink cherry blossom and Elie Saab revealed a dark, seductive twist; a reformation of the usual upbeat poppy print.

  

Takon

Style this sophisticated trend with slick hair tied back or swept off the face, either way keep it refined and let the garments do the talking for this baroque look.

Whether they have ornate ankle-straps or encrusted with crystals, designers have not stopped at just the garments being lavish.

KNEE HAIGH/THIGH HIGH BOOTS

Once again knee-high and thigh-high boots grace the catwalk but with a twist on the traditional.

You will find knee-high boots embellished with velvet, metal and lace resembling the armoury of a knight. Yet for a more futuristic style the thigh-high boots strive in white or black leather.
