Darek Lam

Spring-Summer 2015 – The first swishing skirt down the catwalk of Derek Lam’s SS15 collection, with asymmetrical looping blocks of suede in tones of purple and brown, instantly gave rise to a collection heavily influenced by the 70s. A PVC lavender jacket teamed with smooth flared trousers then confirmed it. The only definitive 70s style came from the round glasses, with many of the pieces taking small influences from the decade such as: flares, materials synonymous with the decade, textural qualities, panelling and high waists.

The opening looks seemed to ooze the laid back era, but further on Lam experimented with layering and embroidery in a much more restrained colour palette which used only the dual simplicity and layering which was intrinsic to seventies fashion. Lam used a decade as inspiration in a unique way in which he combined two types of design: a distinct copy of an original and a re-working and it seems to work.
