Quilted

  

Quilted describes a thickening of a garment. Often stitched into a geometric pattern, it traps a stuffing or padding in between two layers of fabric. This is known to appear on coats and jackets being beneficial for cooler seasons. The first recollection of using quilting in garments was around 3400 B.C.

Originally worn in the Middle Ages under armour in Europe, quilting went on to become popular as a doublet between the 14^th and17^th Century. Recently it has proven to be back on trend and cushioned the catwalks for A/W 12 by designers Proenze Scholeur who used slices of leather to work alongside quilting in a military look whilst Burberry Prorsum resembled British Heritage and wrapped their models in layers thickened by padding.
