Philipp Plein

Philipp Plein Woman Autumn-Winter 2017-18 – Philipp Plein had a very different kind of opening look for his first New York Fall collection in after displaying at Milan for several seasons. Forget the famous it girls, Plein chose Jeremy Meeks, otherwise known as ‘The Hotel Felon,’ whose handsome mugshot catapulted him to fame in 2014. Plein also chose to include musicians and rappers in his runway show, Pete Wentz, Desiigner, Young Thug and Fetty Wap, which seemed appropriate considering the collection seemed to draw a lot of inspiration from music.

There was a live band to play the sound track of the show, a cool, relaxed approach which was reflected in the collection itself. There was a certain streetwear and urban feel to the designs, which look ready to be worn by the increasingly fashion conscious music world.

The collection had an overall customised feel to it, as if someone had taken their favourite leather jacket or band t shirt, ripped it up and sewn badges and studs to it. Plein combined athleisure with what can only be described as ‘rock band merch’ influences, think flames, faded prints, and hoodies and leather jackets with ‘Plein’ and ‘neighbourhood king’ printed in rock lettering. Plein also used these words over evening dresses in black satin with diamante trim and dangerous cut outs, to put an edgy twist on classic evening wear.

Plein paid particular attention to outerwear, with bomber and leather jackets and parka coats being subverted beyond their norms, the leather was python print and the parkers were printed with dollar bills. The collection as a whole certainly would not look out of place in a rap or RnB music video, which seems fitting considering the increasing link between these genres of music and fashion.
