Mannerism

  

Mannerism refers to a period of history between 1520 and 1580 in which European art was particularly influential. The art of the mannerism era was mainly based upon the work of Leonardo Da Vinci and his use of artificial qualities as opposed to natural qualities, and the art of this time is often cited as an inspiration by fashion designers. Mannerist art usually features distorted faces and contortion of the body, and this technique of distortion has heavily influenced the world of screen-printing. Designers such as Peter Pilotto and Mary Katrantzou use distorted prints reminiscent of the mannerist era; however using technicolour updates the look whilst still providing a nod towards the past.
