Autumn-Winter 2013/14 – Couture readily evokes images of romance, beauty and ball gowns. Couture is historic, it’s what could have been had we had the money or the chance to do it all again. Perhaps, that’s why Karl Lagerfeld’s Couture has caused quite the stir. It was modern, and went against the grain of voluptuous evening dresses appropriate for only the smartest of evenings. Instead, there were rigid silhouettes enforced through stern tweed blazers and heavy waist belts. Collars were structured, hair styles were slick, strict and twisted into buns, and hats were worn on the back of the head reinforcing this pared down and more serious Couture. The collection was comprised of layers adding to the functionality of the range. The finale captured the essence of modernity with structured gowns representing the way in which Lagerfeld had played with proportions throughout the show, they were boxy and structured with strips of satin to create a grid of feathers.
