Serge

Serge fabric is a durable fabric. It is usually constructed using a twill weave and has visible diagonal ribs on both sides. It can also be made using a plain weave with a smooth surface. Traditionally, this fabric was made using wool or worsted. Cotton, silk, viscose, synthetic fibres or blends of these can be used. It is used mainly for uniforms, suits, coats, hats and sportswear. Silk Serge is used mainly for lining garments. The term ‘Serge’ is from the Latin word ‘Sericu,’ which means ‘Silk.’ This suggests that Serge fabric was originally primarily a silk fabric.
