Mudcloth

Mudcloth fabric is a handmade Malian fabric. It is a cotton fabric that is traditionally dyed with fermented mud. This is where the name ‘Mudcloth’ originates. In the production process, the male members of the tribe weave the cloth and the women dye it. The dying technigue is a complex procedure using a special mud that is fermented for up to a year. There is a chemical reaction between the cloth and the mud which means the fabric is dyed a brown colour. The cloth is used mainly in fashion, fine art and decoration. Mudcloth is also known as Bogolanfini.
