Moreen

Moreen fabric is a heavy, ribbed fabric. It was originally made from wool, but is now more commonly made from cotton or a blend of cotton and wool. Moreen is typically given a moiré finish, meaning that it has a rippled, ‘watermark’ appearance on the surface. This fabric was very popular between the 17^th and 19^th Centuries, especially in women’s dresses and petticoats. It is also used in furnishing fabrics. Moreen fabric is sturdy, and can be made in various weights, and can be plain rather than patterned. The lighter weights are used for bathing dresses and the heavier qualities for curtains.
