Lawn
Lawn fabric is a lightweight, absorbent fabric that is constructed using a plain weave. It has been used since the Middle Ages, and was formally made of linen, but is now more commonly made from fine, carded cotton. Lawn fabric is available in plain, dyed or patterned varieties. It can also be finished in various ways including calendaring, to produce a more lustrous fabric and sizing, to create a crisper handle. The term ‘Lawn’ comes from the city of Laon in Northern France where it was once made in large quantities. Lawn fabric is used to make blouses, dresses, nightwear and as a base for some kinds of embroidery.
