Giambattista Valli

Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2016 – For Giambattista Valli’s latest couture collection, length and shape played key roles. The dresses presented either ended at mid-thigh, between the ankle and the floor, or, as in the case of two gowns, brushing from mid-thigh down to sweep across the floor behind the wearer.

Bright colours abounded, giving airiness to the cocktail dresses when combined with ruffles, sparkling beadwork and floral detailing. Even the darker pieces, such as a dress comprised of a grey tailored skirt and a long-sleeved bodice in a reedy pattern, had an inherent lightness and refinement.

Unusual shapes add the necessary uniqueness to Valli’s designs, such as dramatically belled sleeves formed from sheer ruffles around a haltered Grecian neckline, or strapless babydoll dresses featuring eye-catching but structurally infinitesimal bands that fall down along the arm. Beautiful floral laces make up several skirts, letting the light shine through, while the gowns towards the end increase in volume and density.

An elegant black gown with a satin empire bodice gives way to a flowing silken skirt, adding a contrasting movement to the more rigid, shiny bodice. The slimmer gowns soon incrementally gave way to the broad tulle skirts Valli has become known for, in a bright white skirt and brocade bodice, to a stunning red gown, to a playful, pale blue gown belted with a satin ribbon.
