Dries Van Noten Women Spring Summer 2016 –

Never failing in his eccentricity, Dries Van Noten’s SS16 collection was, as expected, an explosion of colour, pattern, and texture. His technique of single piece jacquard weaving was in copiousness and manifested itself in the form of a distinctive angel wing print that was the key pattern of the show.

Colour clashes were abound, and subtle were they not – orange, gold, and purple anyone? – but with the flourish that is so distinctive of Van Noten, they somehow worked. Like his AW15 show, the SS16 collection was truly baroque in essence and the rich, psychadellic colour palette and tapestries of patterns felt excessively glamorous.

Stand out pieces included the satin longline blazer in powder blue emblazoned with a red pattern, and the maxi dress in powder blue printed with the angel wing in coral accented with glossy red fringing at the top. Taffeta also made a comeback: in fuchsia pink on the side of a navy blue skirt, and in a gold tiered maxi skirt. Make up was kept to a minimum, presumably to let the clothes do all the talking.

At times, the excessive bordered on grotesque – it is doubtful whether swirly tights in crazy colours will catch on – but Van Noten’s artistic flair and endearing nature allowed for his show to be nothing short of a delight.
