Men’s garters

Men’s garters and sock suspenders are items which hold the sock up on the leg and keep it in place. The garter or suspender is a small belt that is placed around the calf, clipping onto the socks and is normally worn under the knee.

They are usually worn for formal attire for men, only to be worn with formal trousers. It is thought that sock suspenders were used around the Middle Ages with socks being held up using a small piece of cloth. Men’s garters and sock suspenders were not particularly truly fashionable at any point but would likely be worn by business men or for important occasions. They are still available to purchase at present.
