Victorian

The Victorian era refers to the period of time in which Victoria I was Britain’s Queen (1837-1901). This period is often associated with radical change, both politically and socially. In terms of fashion, change was accelerated and the period was notable for sparking certain trends which are still relevant in the modern fashion industry. The era began with women favouring gowns with sloping shoulders and hoop skirts, often worn with crinolines and intricate hats. Towards the 1870s, the traditional tea-dress became a wardrobe staple for the first time; this was a notable change in fashion, showing a move away from restrictive corsets to flowing, unstructured, slightly shorter gowns.
