Tartan

Tartan pattern is a pattern consisting of both horizontal and vertical lines. These are usually in varying thicknesses to create interesting patterns. The colours vary dramatically, depending on the type of tartan, and where the stripes overlap, different colours are created. Tartan originates from Scotland and was used to distinguish clans from one another. Tartan pattern is usually colour woven as this is the way that the intersecting bands of colour are created. The first tartan textiles were created in 400BC and became very popular as a fabric in the 16^th Century. Tartan is generally made using wool or cotton, but many other fibres can be used to create different end fabrics.
